Description
The Étangs de Villepey, a veritable natural setting, are a haven for wildlife and birdwatchers.
But the Étangs de Villepey are much more than just a Mediterranean lagoon. With its 255 hectares of natural habitat, this rare site lies on the border between the Camargue and Italy, making it a real treasure to discover.
It is home to exceptional flora and fauna, and provides a haven for over 268 species of birds. The site is an ideal place for birdwatching enthusiasts. The best times to observe migratory birds are in March and early September, during the great migrations.
What's more, thanks to ingenious facilities such as footbridges, observatories and trails, it is now possible to discover these wild spaces while respecting their fragility.
There are two sides to the site: on the Esclamandes and Saint-Aygulf beaches side, you'll discover the richness of the dune belt, reed beds and riparian vegetation, before immersing yourself in local traditions at the Esclamandes farm. On the other side, on the sentier du littoral (coastal path), the landscapes change along the way, with bodies of water, vegetation and varied fauna.
Let yourself be guided by the colors of nature as the seasons change, and explore with a naturalist guide or on your own. And in February, don't miss the "World Wetlands Days": the perfect opportunity to take part in activities, guided tours, workshops and exhibitions. And if you come across a coastline warden, don't hesitate to ask him or her any questions you may have: they're there to help you better understand this natural treasure.
The Étangs de Villepey are waiting to amaze you at every turn. Respect this magical place, and it will repay you a hundredfold.
