En 1875, le « Magenta », un cuirassé de la marine nationale, brûle en rade de Toulon. Des vestiges et d’objets antiques, stockés à son bord, conservés par le Musée du Louvre et le ministère de la Culture, seront exposés.

A son bord, une cargaison de 46 caisses d'antiquités issue de fouilles archéologiques menées à Carthage. 2 080 stèles puniques et une statue en marbre représentant l'impératrice Sabine sombrent par 15 m de fond. Des scaphandriers parviennent à récupérer un certain nombre de stèles et des fragments de la statue, puis l’épave est dynamitée pour sécuriser l’accès au port. Localisée en avril 1994 par le Groupe de Recherche en Archéologie Navale, elle connaît trois campagnes de fouilles qui permettent de récupérer la tête de la statue et de nombreuses stèles.
Richement documentée, cette exposition fait également le lien avec l’histoire des prémices de la recherche archéologique sous-marine. La projection du film « Louis Boutan ou l’invention de la photographie sous-marine » qui porte sur les débuts de la photographie sous-marine et ses applications, dont l’opération de sauvetage du Magenta, sera également à découvrir
